BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Baton Rouge police have charged two suspects in connection with the highway shooting that killed 18-year-old Jayrick Washington, a Southern University freshman, in March 2024. The shooting, which police say stemmed from a road rage incident, occurred on March 23. Officers responded to reports of gunfire on I-110 near the Fuqua Street exit ramp and found Washington's vehicle had crashed. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives determined that two vehicles were weaving through traffic on I-10 North near Dalrymple Drive before multiple shots were fired as they approached the Fuqua Street exit. The suspects fled the scene after the shooting. During the investigation, police identified and arrested 23-year-old Yancey Jarrell and 20-year-old George Applewhite III. Both men are charged with first-degree murder and are being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Police confirmed that both suspects were already in jail for unrelated incidents when they were developed as suspects in the highway shooting. Jarrell had been arrested for his alleged involvement in the November 2024 drive-by shooting on Swan Avenue, which killed 8-year-old Diellon Daniels and injured five others. Meanwhile, Applewhite was arrested earlier this year in connection with a different incident, and subsequent investigation linked him to the interstate shooting. This is an ongoing investigation. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.
