BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A Wasco woman who used information she stole from patient health care files to make more than $825,000 in fraudulent credit card purchases was sentenced to five years in prison. Karina Arceo, 34, also was sentenced to three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft and conspiring to commit bank fraud, according to a release sent Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Justice, Eastern District of California. Her partner and co-defendant, Miguel Leyva, was previously sentenced to five years and five months in prison. Through her job in Kern County, Arceo gained access to patient files at health care providers and stole personal information to open thousands of credit cards using the victims' identities. "The defendant used patient health care files to commit fraud and identity theft instead of treating those files with the care and sensitivity they deserve," U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert said in the release. Between 2016 and 2022, Arceo stole the personal information of more than 125 people, prosecutors said. Arceo and Leyva used the fraudulent cards to purchase designer clothes, home appliances, furniture, luxury camping equipment, tickets to concerts and sporting events, shoes and art, among other things. Some items they resold. To keep the scheme going, the couple used checks stolen from Kern County companies to access the companies’ bank accounts and make fraudulent payments on the cards, prosecutors said. They were arrested in November 2022. Text messages between Arceo and Leyva revealed she masterminded the scheme. She sent the stolen information to Leyva, told him how to make purchases and even instructed him on what to say to suspicious cashiers, prosecutors said. In the messages, Arceo applied the lyrics of a popular hip-hop song to their situation, calling herself "the boss" who "makes money move," while describing Leyva as only a "worker," prosecutors said.
