Rochester City Council will vote on Good Cause Eviction protections
Dec 17, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester City Council will be voting on Good Cause Evictions protections Tuesday night.
The legislation aims to protect renters from rate hikes, unfair evictions, and guarantee lease renewals to anyone who pays on time.
Landlords would have to provide proof that a tenant did not pay rent and that it did not result from an unreasonable rent increase. They would also have to prove if the tenant violated a lease obligation, was doing illegal activity, and/or unreasonably refused to give a landlord access.
City Council President Miguel Meléndez also introduced an amendment to the bill and some legislative items — change the definition of small landlord from 10 to one, create a task force to oversee the implementation, councilmembers must evaluate the outcome of the legislation, and create a citywide education campaign.
City Council is expected to vote on the legislation at 6 p.m.
