Tallahassee, FL (December 16, 2024)—Architects Lewis + Whitlock (ALW), a Tallahassee-based architecture firm, took home three awards during the Tallahassee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Tallahassee) bi-annual Honors Awards. Firm of the Year AwardALW was awarded the AIA Tallahassee Architecture Firm of the Year Award—the organization’s highest honor for a design practice. The award recognizes excellence in design and leadership through service and influence on the profession, depth of portfolio, firm culture, and exemplary outcomes for clients and the community. Firms considered for the award must have a history of working within Tallahassee, contributing significant projects, accomplishments, and service over a period of at least five years. Co-founded in 2000 by principals Rodney Lewis, AIA and Cam Whitlock, AIA, ALW is an award-winning architecture, interior design, and planning firm focused on integrated design and setting new standards for performance and design excellence. Principal Cam Whitlock, AIA, received the Architect of the Year Award for his lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Cam’s dedication to professional mentorship has been instrumental in fostering a thriving studio culture that values growth and design exploration. He has not only inspired emerging architects within the firm but has also led ALW’s internship program, providing invaluable guidance to aspiring professionals. Beyond the firm, Cam’s dedication extends into civic engagement and community service. Most recently, he was nominated for his proactive involvement in community organizations and initiatives for the 2024 Distinguished Leadership Awards presented by Leadership Tallahassee. Through this involvement, Cam consistently advocates for architecture’s role in shaping equitable and resilient communities. Emerging Professional of the Year AwardRyan Sheplak, Vice President of Architecture + Design, was named Emerging Professional of the Year for his professional accomplishments and leadership. Ryan is a dedicated advocate for the architectural profession. As Vice President/President-Elect of AIA Tallahassee, his leadership has fostered stronger advocacy for the architectural profession, expanded culture and community outreach, enhanced membership services, improved governance within the chapter, driven fundraising efforts, and increased event participation through well-organized programs that engage the local design community. He is a 2017 Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) volunteer team graduate. His commitment to public engagement and placemaking is evident in projects like the TLH Sculpture, a symbol of civic pride, which he created and fundraised to create a sense of place on the south side of Tallahassee. Furthermore, Ryan engages with the students at the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) School of Architecture and Engineering Technology (SA+ET) by serving as a jury member for end-of-semester student project reviews. These awards and other honors were presented on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Goodwood Museum & Gardens.
