Man facing charges for fraud scheme in Rio Arriba County

RIO ARRIBA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) –The Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office has arrested a man for fraud. According to a news release, on Dec. 13 a Rio Arriba County resident reported receiving a call from a man claiming to be a US Marshal. The man told the resident his social security number had been tied to money laundering and that he would be arrested if he didn't pay.
The resident then received a second call from a woman claiming to be with the Española Police Department who told him to withdraw the money from his bank account and transfer it to a nearby ATM.

The sheriff's office says the resident was unable to use the ATM and on Dec. 15 deputies waited at his home for the caller to come collect the money they had demanded.
Deputies arrested Mahendra Darbar, who they say traveled from Pennsylvania to New Mexico. He is facing one count of fraud over $20,000 and one count of attempt to commit fraud over $20,000.
The Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office reminds the public to remain alert regarding scammers impersonating law enforcement officials. It is important to note that the United States Marshals Service does not conduct phone calls to individuals.
