FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A local business leader is putting in the work on his 50th birthday with a challenge to aid local organizations that have helped his family thrive over the years. Tuesday, Evan Wood - Vice President of People & Strategy at Fort Wayne Metals - plans to walk 50,000 steps with a goal to raise $50,000 for local organizations. Wood chose five organizations that have made a personal impact on his family: Turnstone Center, Hope's Harbor, Challenged Athletes Foundation, USA Patriots Athletics and the USA Volleyball Foundation. You can help Wood reach his fundraising goal here. His twin daughters were born premature, and one of the girls died shortly before her third birthday, Wood said. He credited Hope's Harbor with offering them hospitality homes as they traveled back and forth to Indianapolis for hospital visits. When another one of his daughters was 7 years old, her leg was amputated above the knee. "All of these organizations have been critical in pouring into her life," Wood said. He began walking around 7 a.m. Tuesday and the fundraiser lasts until 7 p.m.
