New traffic pattern to debut on Pleasant Valley Road amid wishbone bridge construction
Dec 17, 2024
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Beginning Wednesday, drivers along South Pleasant Valley Road will need to adapt to a new lane configuration as construction work continues on Austin's Longhorn Dam Multimodal Improvements Project.
The new traffic pattern had been scheduled to debut Tuesday, but was postponed to Wednesday due to rain over the weekend, a spokesperson for Austin Capital Delivery Services confirmed.
The project is adding a "wishbone" bridge to cross Lady Bird Lake and better connect pedestrians and cyclists along the Ann & Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. As construction work continues, the following traffic patterns took effect Tuesday:
Both traffic lanes are shifted to the east side of South Pleasant Valley Road, with one lane heading north and one lane heading south
Pedestrians and cyclists on the hike-and-bike trail are also relocated to the east side of South Pleasant Valley Road
Canterbury Street will remain a detour access point for pedestrians and cyclists on the trail, with one-way traffic heading west

With the wishbone bridge project, five of the nine pier caps have been placed, which will serve as a support system for the bridge girders and decks. Come January, the remaining four pier caps are expected to be installed.

Also beginning in January, crews will start work installing the girders, which are precast concrete beams that'll support the future bridge deck. Work on the east side of the underpass running beneath South Pleasant Valley Road is expected to wrap by the end of December, with construction and excavation efforts beginning on the west side of the underpass afterward.
That west side underpass work is projected to wrap in May.
Construction on the project runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. More details are available on the project's website.
