New York City is no longer under a drought warning after several days of rain and other favorable developments, Mayor Adams announced Monday. The drought warning was declared on Nov. 18 and lasted for nearly a month, as the city’s water management team worked to improve reservoir levels throughout its massive watershed. “We’re in a much better place than we were a few weeks ago, allowing us to downgrade our drought warning to a drought watch,” Adams said in a statement. “If conditions continue, we hope that, in the coming weeks, we will be able to rescind the watch as well.” New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks at a press conference in the Blue Room in City Hall Monday, Dec. 16, 2024 in Manhattan, New York. (Barry Williams/ New York Daily News) About 1-3 inches of rain have fallen throughout the city in December, with more accumulating in surrounding areas. Though Tuesday was expected to remain dry, more rain was in the forecast for Wednesday afternoon into Thursday evening. Reservoir levels were also boosted by upstate snowmelt and the decision to pause the massive repair project on the Delaware Aqueduct. Officials said the project continued into the fall and winter based on projections for above-average rainfall. Instead, the city recorded its driest month in history in October. “It’s a good reminder of the kind of world climate change is creating: a world with more extreme weather events and more dangerous impacts,” Adams said. This year’s drought warning was the city’s first since 2002. It came amid hundreds of brush fires in the five boroughs, including a blaze in Prospect Park. The drought watch, which began on Nov. 2, remains in effect.
