FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – President-Elect Donald Trump announced his intention to end Daylight Saving Time Friday, saying it is inconvenient and costly. The move has been on a cycle of support for years but has continually failed to pass. Despite common belief, one local farmer says ending Daylight Saving Time will not have a significant impact on farmers. He says if the sun is up, so is he. “Our clock is the sun. We're on the solar clock. Sun comes up, we go to work,” local farmer Joe Del Bosque said. He says the only way ending Daylight Saving Time could impact farmers is in energy costs. “PG&E has peak hours where the cost of power increases, and, in that, we don't know what time that will be,” Del Bosque said. This is not the first time Republicans have tried to end time changes. Sen. Marco Rubio got the Sunshine Protection Act passed through the Senate in 2022, but it was stalled in Congress. “There seems to be a general consensus amongst lawmakers and the public that this switch between Daylight Saving and Standard Time needs to end,” Fresno State Political Science Professor Tom Holyoke said. Holyoke says the move has bipartisan support. The hangup is whether to stick with Daylight Saving Time or Standard Time. “I understand that there's a lot of people in the business community who would prefer Daylight Saving. They feel that they're getting a little more light during business hours, and that might be good for business. It's my understanding that health professionals believe that Standard Time is actually better for the body's rhythms,” Holyoke said. He thinks Trump could accomplish ending the time change if he makes it a priority, but he says it is likely low on his to-do list. “This may not be the most pressing issue that he should really put his political capital into,” Holyoke said.
