Expanding individual homelessness winter capacity in Massachusetts

HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - In response to the growing issue of homelessness during the winter, the Executive Office of Housing and Living Communities has awarded millions of dollars to shelters across the state.
Shelters across the state will be receiving $9.9 million dollars in supplemental grants to prevent unsheltered homelessness, during cold winter months. "That will provide those individuals who are sleeping rough an opportunity to get inside for several months," said Executive Director of Craigs Doors, Tim Mccarthy.
The state count reflects nearly 30,000 homeless individuals living in Massachusetts, up 54 percent from last year. "The problem is the intersection of a variety of social issues primarily that's wealth and equality, and this sort of individualist culture that doesn't focus so much on service in ways American culture has in the past," added Mccarthy.
Craig's Doors, a shelter in Hadley has been granted over $213,000 to help the growing homeless population. Currently, there are nearly 40 occupants occupying the bottom floor, and with this money, they'll be able to open up an additional 20 beds on the second floor.
"We're able to preserve life and provide access to resources that will hopefully provide these guests with the opportunity to establish stability, identify their goals, and utilize our support and resources in meeting those goals," expressed Mccarthy. They will be given access to important services like assistance in finding a job, building up savings, and finding permanent housing.
Other shelters like the Center for Human Development in Holyoke were awarded over $81,000 for over 10 winter beds. The nonprofit Clinical Support Options, a behavioral and mental health agency serving Springfield, Greenfield, and Northampton received more than $1 million for more than 22 beds and expanded daytime warming capacity for up to 100 individuals.
