CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — WSAV reported on what residents were calling an uptick in thefts and vandalization in one Chatham County neighborhood several months ago, and Monday, they said that it's still a problem. "I got up came out here," Peggy Walters, a Savannah Highlands resident, said. "My chairs had been turned upside down and pushed away. The decorations on my table had been pushed off. My table had been turned upside down. The legs had been taken out of it, and I had a wreath that had been destroyed. My son's ashtray had been turned upside down and all the ashes and cigarettes… Disgusting." Walters said that she believed this all happened late Saturday night, and that she thinks it's more than just an isolated incident. "At Halloween, many many people their decorations were taken. Some pranks were made with them and just a lot of stealing of them," she said. That's why Walters said that she only put out minimal decorations this year. Still, she said she thinks her experience is part of a string of incidents that are about more than decorations. "It's kind of just been trouble since I've been here," she said. "There's a lot of trying to break into the cars. Cars have been stolen. There's been a few shootings." Several neighbors on the Savannah Highlands community Facebook page have mentioned instances of theft or property damage in the last few months. Walters doesn't have the ring footage of the vandal that hit her front porch, but many others in the area have posted ring doorbell footage of similar incidents to the group. "They're coming up to the doors," she said, "knocking loudly on the doors. They're saying things to the ring cameras. They're being very bold." News 3 reached out to Police to see if there has been a significant uptick in theft or property damage in the highlands, and they are working on getting those records. In the meantime, Walters said recent events in her neighborhood are making her question whether she wants to stay in the area. "I'm afraid to take my dog out at night," she said. "You know, I'm afraid to open that slider door for myself and for my dog. I'm just afraid that it's going to keep escalating and get more and more serious." If you or someone you know is the victim of theft or damage to your property, you’re encouraged to report any instance to your local law enforcement agency.
