The crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. eastbound on the 10, just east of Riverside Avenue.
For reasons still under investigation, the driver of a Toyota Camry drifted off of the freeway and onto the right shoulder and hit a tree stump, causing the car to smoke and catch on fire.
Four of the five occupants were killed, with the sole survivor, a four-year-old child, hospitalized in critical condition, California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Sauceda said.
Details on the victims and the current condition of the child were not available.
