PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Multiple drone sightings across Hampton Roads have caused frustration among lawmakers, however a drone-defense expert has suggested a call to action. "I'm chairman of the Intelligence Committee and I don't feel I've got a satisfactory answer," Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) said Monday. "Governor Youngkin and I are going to get a brief later this week." Stacie Pettyjohn is a defense strategist who studies drones for the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization Center for a New American Security. "I don't know if any of these events are connected," she said in reference to other drone sightings in New Jersey, New York and other parts of the US. "No one is clear whether they have hostile intent or they're just hobbyists who went astray. Maybe it's military enthusiast who wants to get a glimpse of a plane or a ship or something." The impact here in Hampton Roads ranges from threats to privacy to national security with our heavy military presence. Pettyjohn references the lack of readiness towards drones that swarmed over Langley Air Force Base back in October. "With what's happened at Langley, they need to proactively put in place some of the capabilities to at least detect and monitor and then be prepared to intervene if there are drones," she said. Pettyjohn believes a coordinated drone policy should be formulated, beginning with the Department of Defense. "And then you have DHS, you have the FAA, you have the FBI, you have local law enforcement. We need an interagency solution." Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va. 2nd District) of Virginia Beach serves on the House Armed Services Committee. "Last year with the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the country, we didn't ask questions until it was perhaps too late. The American people deserve that transparency and deserve to know," Kiggans said. Despite claims, Pettyjohn says most drones won't stay airborne for more than 30 minutes because of battery limits so don't feel a sense of urgency to react to the sight of one. "I don't think there's anything that civilians immediately need to be doing," Pettyjohn said. "They should not be attempting to shoot down drones or otherwise stop them, which is actually illegal."
