MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Within 36 hours, Memphis police report in two separate incidents, two children got a hold of a gun and shot themselves. Now, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office said it hasn't been determined yet if there will be any charges. The first tragedy struck in Hickory Hill just before 8 a.m. Saturday. Police were called to an apartment on Whispering Lane where they say a 7-year-old girl got a hold of a gun and accidentally pulled the trigger. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died. Then police were called to South Memphis early Monday morning where they say a 16-year-old girl was found shot in a home. Investigators said the teen tried to tell them it was a drive-by shooting, but SkyCop Camera footage showed a different story. Instead, officers said the teen was seen walking up to the house when a gunshot flash came from her. 16-year-old girl critical after shooting in South Memphis "I saw all the cars parked down there. They had the little children in the back of the car," a neighbor said. Police said the 16-year-old girl was taken to Le Bonheur in critical condition. "It's tragic and devastating no matter the age of the patient or child coming in," Le Bonheur Pediatric Emergency Specialist Nick Watkins said. In 2023, Le Bonheur reported a record high of 180 patients with gunshot wounds. This year, as of last week, there's been 148 patients. A majority were teenagers, but 26 patients were under 5 years old. Of the 148 patients this year, nearly 40% were unintentional shootings. "We all have a responsibility to our children and our community," Watkins said. The Centers for Disease Control found approximately three-quarters of fatal unintentional shootings among children involved an unlocked and/or loaded firearm. Studies show if just 20% of more households stored their firearms locked and unloaded, youth firearm suicide and fatal unintentional shootings would drop by 32%. Child killed after accidentally shooting herself: MPD As we enter the holidays, research also shows there's an uptick in unintentional shootings by children due to more time spent in and around the home. "These injuries are 100 percent preventable. If you can have your firearms stored, locked away and separate from ammunition, you would have a better chance of decreasing these events," Watkins said.
