Should pets be holiday gifts? Experts say think twice
Dec 16, 2024
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — As the holidays approach, pet adoptions often spike. But experts caution that gifting pets may not always be the best idea.
Animal shelter workers emphasize that adopting a pet is a long-term commitment, not a spur-of-the-moment decision.
“It’s not just about picking the smallest dog or the cutest kitten,” they explain. “It’s about finding a pet that fits your family’s lifestyle and ensuring you’re ready for the responsibility.”
Biggest financial fears of North Dakota parents on Christmas
Furry Friends Rockin’ Rescue, a shelter currently housing more than 400 animals, works hard to make sure every adoption is a good match. Staff ask detailed questions to confirm that families are prepared for the time, care, and financial needs a pet requires.
Still, the shelter knows that despite these precautions, some pets may be returned after the holidays when families realize the full scope of what pet ownership involves.
Their message is simple: think carefully before giving a pet as a gift. While animals can bring love and joy, they also need time, attention, and are a huge commitment.
