Shoppers feel safe at Valley Plaza mall, but more security wouldn't hurt

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- False reports of a shooting prompted panic, some hysteria and an evacuation Sunday at the Valley Plaza mall. By Monday, it appeared to be business as usual for holiday shoppers.
Bakersfield police confirmed they received reports of shots fired around 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Valley Plaza Mall. Stores went on lock down, people evacuated, and restaurants closed. However, after canvassing the area and checking surveillance footage; no evidence of a shooting was found.

Officers were heavily armed as they swarmed Valley Plaza to evacuate the mall and lock down JC Penny and Target while they searched for a possible gunman. Shoppers left in a panic, some even leaving behind uneaten food.
One worker saw the hysteria.
"All I heard was a scream from that area over there, by Starbucks," said Jenifer Castanae, a kiosk worker. "A lot of people started running this way, a whole bunch of people on this side. Then security started running over there, then I saw BPD coming in with weapons."
Castanae still feels safe working at Valley Plaza but thinks there should be more security.
"It is just seasonal for me, but I do think we need more security for the other workers that stay here and work for years."
Shoppers at Valley Plaza Monday morning echoed Castanae's feeling of safety. The reports of a shooting Sunday caused panic in mall shoppers and even more rumors of what happened.

Tommy Tunson, former Arvin police chief and CSUB criminal justice professor, said crowds caught in a situation like Sunday's at Valley Plaza should be ready to move.
"Stop, look, and listen and you go the opposite direction of where you hear the noise, don't run toward the noise to see what is going on. I can't stress enough to orderly evacuate," he said.
Bakersfield police say there are no suspects, no arrests, and no shooting. We may never know what went on Sunday evening, but for now, it is all clear to finish up holiday shopping.
