President-elect Trump on Monday named George Edward Glass as his pick for ambassador to Japan.
“I am pleased to announce George Edward Glass as our next United States Ambassador to Japan,” Trump said in his Truth Social post.
Glass spent time as an ambassador to Portugal during the first Trump administration. During that time, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa gave him the Order of Infante D. Henrique award, which “honors achievements of an extraordinary nature and special relevance to Portugal,” according to a 2021 page on the U.S Embassy and Consulate in Portugal’s website.
“I am humbled by such an award,” Glass said in a quote on the webpage. “This honor is recognition of the tremendous accomplishments we have made Side-by-Side. It has been a great privilege to serve my country and to work with the Portuguese government and people.”
According to a report on the State Department website from Trump’s last administration, Glass also previously owned a company focused on real estate and led a technology investment bank in Oregon.
“As a former President of an Investment Bank, George will bring his business acumen to the Ambassador’s position,” Trump said in his Monday Truth Social post. “George graduated from the University of Oregon, served as Alumni President, and on its Board of Trustees. He will always PUT AMERICA FIRST. Congratulations George!”
