The county Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 26-year-old man killed by his three dogs in a Mira Mesa park on Friday as Pedro Luis Ortega. Ortega, a San Diego resident, took his son to the park with the family’s three dogs when for an unknown reason the dogs began to attack Ortega, officials said. He was critically injured in the incident. Paramedics transported him to a hospital, where doctors tried aggressive resuscitative efforts before he died. The San Diego Humane Society on Sunday said it had euthanized the three XL bully dogs that attacked the man and seriously injured a second person. The deadly mauling happened around noon Friday at a children’s playground area of Mesa Viking Neighborhood Park on Westonhill Drive. Shortly after the mauling, police and Humane Society law enforcement officers located two dogs running loose, while a third dog was secured in a vehicle. The agency impounded the dogs and placed them under mandatory bite quarantine protocols as it began an investigation. All three dogs were humanely euthanized after a second owner agreed they should be put down. The Humane Society said its records showed no previous history involving the dogs. XL bullies are not officially recognized as their own breed but are a larger version of the Standard American Bully, according to the National Kennel Club. Such dogs are often referred to as pit bulls, though XL bullies are larger and more muscular than standard pit bulls. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there was an average of 43 dog-bite deaths per year between 2011 and 2021 in the U.S.
