Experts said the number of speed-related crashes rises from November through February when driving conditions are the most hazardous. With that in mind, there are a few key takeaways officials emphasized:
Equip cars with emergency supplies, including shovels, flares and jumper cables.
Plan to leave home earlier than usual so you can take it slow on the roads.
Always clear snow or debris off your lights and windows.
"For more than two decades speeding has been a factor in more than 1/3 of all motor vehicle fatalities nationwide," said Mark Schroader, chair & commissioner at the Department of Motor Vehicles. "1/3, that's mothers, a father, and brothers and sisters. Children, husbands, and wives that may still be here today if someone had made the simple decision to slow down."
