APS board to discuss future of Taft Middle School

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The APS Board of Education is expected to consider a proposal to shut down Taft Middle School on Wednesday. The proposed closure of the school in the North Valley is part of the Albuquerque Public School's right-sizing plan.
If approved, Taft students would go to Taylor Middle School, which is about two miles away. The Coronado Dual Language Magnet Elementary School would then move into Taft's building.

APS said Taft has been on a right-sizing list for several years, and the district plans to build a $28 million classroom block at Taylor.
The APS superintendent Gabriella Blakey has said the right sizing plan is a way to deal with declining enrollment. "How we make sure that our footprint of buildings matches the number of students we have, and make sure we have both financial stability and we have robust academics in the school," said Blakey.
However, some parents are encouraging others to speak out against the vote. "What they're doing with elementary, middle, and high school families is part of the reason their enrollment is declining," said Amy Ziegler, president of Alvarado Elementary School PTA.
