LUNENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Virginia man was killed earlier this month after a bear fell from a tree and hit him.
According to the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), the department was notified of what they described as a "hunting incident" at around 9:50 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9 in Lunenburg County.
The initial investigation indicates that a group of hunters were following a bear that had run up a tree. The department said a hunter within the group then shot the bear, and as it fell it hit 58-year-old Lester C. Harvey, who was standing around 10 feet away from the bottom of the tree.
A member of the hunting group gave him first aid until local fire and EMS arrived. Harvey was then taken to a local hospital and then eventually transported to VCU Medical Center.
Several days later, on Friday, Dec. 13, Harvey died due to his injuries, according to the department.
The department said they are not currently seeking any charged related to the incident.
According to his obituary, Harvey was from the town of Phenix in Charlotte County and is survived by his wife, three sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren. He is described as "a friend to all" and "an avid outdoorsman."
A funeral service will be held for him at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19 at located at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
