‘I feel frustrated’: Southampton Elementary School mother speaks on recent bus overcrowding issues

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A Richmond parent said she’s considering removing her son from his school after she claims bus overcrowding issues have gotten out of hand.
Tora Hargrove said her son, Krishawn, has dealt with constant problems -- such as kids sitting three, and even five, to a seat at a time on the bus to and from Southampton Elementary School. She also said there's also been bullying and fighting on the bus rides.
“I feel frustrated, unheard and overall disappointed,” Hargrove said.
Hargrove recalled an incident that happened to her child in October. According to Hargrove, another child continuously hit her son on the bus ride home.
Hargrove said Krishawn tried getting the attention of the bus driver who was driving and couldn't help, so Krishawn fought back. Hargrove said she's reached out to the school and police for help but feels not enough is being done to protect her child.
“It makes me worry,” Hargrove said. “It’s stressful not knowing whether my child is going to make it to or from home. We're considering taking our son out of Richmond Public and doing virtual learning.”
8News reached out to Richmond Public Schools officials who said the district split the bus lines for Southampton on Dec. 10. The district did not address the allegations of violence and bullying.
8News asked Hargrove if she saw any improvement last week after that change but has not yet received a response.
