$25K reward still up for grabs in DC staffer's 1981 murder
Dec 16, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Marc Nelson was only 14 years old when his father was murdered in cold blood.
Now 58 years old, he will never forget the last time he saw his father — prominent Capitol Hill staffer Raymond Nelson — alive.
It was the night before the 59-year-old was found bludgeoned to death in his apartment.
"When he left, he didn't just say, 'I'll see you guys another time' ... he went around to each one of us with tears in his eyes and said goodbye," Marc recalled. "To me, that indicates very strongly that my dad knew something bad was going to happen to him."
The father-of-three's roommate found his lifeless body in their ransacked Quincy Street apartment on June 1, 1981.
The Rhode Island native had spent more than a decade working as an administrative assistant for Sen. Claiborne Pell following a stint at The Providence Journal.
Raymond regularly traveled to Washington, D.C., after Pell was elected and eventually moved there.
"My mom used to say that he was the most loved man on Capitol Hill," Marc said.

Though his father was known for being outgoing and friendly, Marc said he struggled with alcoholism. Raymond also came out as gay after separating from Marc's mother when he was 9 years old.
Marc was in middle school and remembers being called to the front office the day he learned his dad had been killed.
"I went down and I saw my mom and my dad's lover ... they were both in the office waiting for me," Marc recalled. "I got in the car and no one said anything on the ride there, but I pretty much knew something like this had happened."
"When we got home my mom and I were sitting on the couch and she said, 'dad is dead,'" he continued.
Marc described the months that followed as being the most difficult of his life.
"It was just a horrible time," he said. "It was the summer right before I started high school."
12 News reached out to the Metropolitan Police Department regarding the ongoing investigation into Raymond's death.
"No evidence proving who committed this crime has been obtained," Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
"There were no signs of forced entry into his apartment," Marc said. "There were signs of a struggle, of course, but instead of being shot or stabbed like you would expect in some kind of break-in or a robbery ... he was hit over his head with a typewriter."
"I thought of that as basically being a message that he may have known some information about some powerful people that they didn't want to get out," he added.
The motive for Raymond's murder remains unclear to this day. Marc fears whoever is responsible for his dad's murder has now died and will never be held accountable.
"I definitely would like to see the perpetrators caught ... but I really don't think that that's going to happen," Marc said.
Metropolitan Police is still offering a $25,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest or conviction of Raymond's killer. Anyone who may be able to aid in the investigation is urged to call (202) 727-9099 or email [email protected].
