(WPRI) — Those who fish for striped bass could soon face stricter regulations. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC)’s Striped Bass Management Board is discussing no-harvest or no-target seasons in 2025 at a special meeting on Monday. According to the most recent 2024 stock assessment conducted by the ASMFC, striped bass are overfished and there's a less than 50% chance of rebuilding the stock by 2029 as planned. Key challenges included low recruitment and the lack of strong year-classes to supply the fish. The ASMFC said the rebuilding plan will not meet its goal unless new measures are taken to rebuild the stock. During the 2024 season, the regulation for Rhode Island was one fish between 28 and 31 inches per person per day. It also advised anglers to use circle hooks when fishing recreationally with bait.
