Said to be “the most remarkable monologue in the language”, written in 1958, Krapp’s Last Tape brings us into the life of a 69-year-old, corroded writer, on his 69th birthday. In a darkened den with one stark light above him sits Samuel Beckett’s most autobiographical character, Krapp. In almost rigid isolation, he has settled in with tape recorder and tapes preparing to record a memorial tape to assess his recent year. As every year, the birthday taping will begin at the exact time of his birth. To prime the pump, Krapp listens to a tape he made on his 39th birthday, a year he felt he was on the road to greatness as he worked to finish writing a life-altering book – his opus magnum. We listen in as Krapp meets again his younger self, an idealistic, somewhat pompous man whose dedication to fame and importance masks a hunger for a sensual life. The tape highlights the loneliness of Krapp’s life, as he both yearns for and mocks his younger self and takes us to the depth of that loneliness. We are gripped by his words. Samuel Beckett, who said, “I have little talent for happiness’ first produced Krapp’s Last Tape in 1958, brings us nonetheless to laughter when Krapp displays his most childlike and clownish characteristics. He is as comic as he is lost, eating bananas to the point of illness and throwing silly fits in response to the pointlessness of his perfectionism. The post Deep End Theater Presents Krapp’s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett @ 21Ten Theater | Nobel Prize Winning One Man Show first appeared on PDX Pipeline. The post Deep End Theater Presents Krapp’s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett @ 21Ten Theater | Nobel Prize Winning One Man Show appeared first on PDX Pipeline.
