CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) -- Doctors at Chesapeake Regional Healthcare are able to minimize the pain lung cancer patients undergo with a one-and-done procedure. "We're able to, in one day, be able to diagnose that the patient has lung cancer and then be able to take it out right then and there, and then the patient is able to go home relatively quickly," Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Stephen Noble, MD said. Josie O'Kane went to Dr. Noble after a scan for one medical issue revealed a small nodule on her lung. It came as a surprise to the non-smoker. "I'm an active person for my age, I guess, kayaking and with my son. And we go, my friend and I, go on trips and we have border collies, and we do lots of stuff," O'Kane said. Dr. Noble shared the surgery O'Kane had in July was made possible through technology and teamwork. Inside the operating room, Dr. Melhem Imad uses CAT scans as a map to insert a camera down a patient's throat. Then, he uses another system, a navigational bronchoscopy, to navigate beyond where the camera can see to reach deep into the lung. "I'm able to get to it through the catheter based on that system, biopsy it, leave out a little fiduciary marker, then we tattoo it. That marking is going to stay in the lung and that area," Imad said. Next, Dr. Noble takes a seat at his console, about six feet from the patient, and gets to work. "We use the intuitive robot, which allows us to really remove lung cancer like this, essentially like playing a video game," Noble said. He makes five small incisions, locates the nodule and removes it along with surrounding lymph nodes. Most patients require no further treatment and are able to return home within two or three days. O'Kane had a biopsy before she went to Dr. Noble and admitted it was nerve-wracking to await the results. She revealed if she'd had the choice for the one anesthesia procedure, she would have definitely done it. She is now back to normal with more ways to enjoy an active lifestyle. "A lot of things to make and build and garden and you know, all of those wonderful things," she said. Doctors recommend lung cancer screenings yearly to catch it early.
