MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The City of Memphis has announced that its Engineering and Fire Services has secured a $4.4 million federal grant through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
In a press release, the city said the goal of the grant is to address critical vulnerabilities at an essential fire services facility located at 354 Adams Avenue. The funding will help resolve the risk of catastrophic failure posed by a 120-year-old brick-arch culvert located beneath the facility.
The project will also enhance floodproofing and earthquake resistance, ensuring this critical site remains operational during emergencies.

The city said the facility will house Fire Logistical Services, Turnout Care and Maintenance Facility, Air Mask Services and Hydrant Maintenance all of which are essential for fire department operations.
By upgrading the support functions, the city believes this will improve response times and better position firefighter rescue teams to protect the community during disasters and emergencies.
The four-year initiative involved collaboration with the State Historic Preservation Office and the Federal Department of Environmental and Historic Preservation to preserve the cultural significance of the brick culvert. Renovation of the facility is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
