INDIANAPOLIS - As the end of the year approaches, thousands are expected to travel to spend Christmas with loved ones across the globe. It’s already been a successful year for the Indianapolis International Airport overall. At this time of the year, frequent flyers are checking their bags and heading somewhere tropical. Indy airport leader flying high with record on the horizon “I’m going to Grenada, and we're going to meet some friends and just hang out until, like, Christmas Eve,” said one traveler Paula Swearingen. Just hang out on the beach for like seven days.” While others are kicking back and relaxing to the Christmas tunes before hopping in the security line to head home. “I get to see my siblings for the first time in a long time so that'll be fun,” said Jordan King, a West Lafayette student traveling home.  For some, like one online Purdue graduate, this is their first time flying in and out of Indy. “I actually live in East Texas, so I flew here to do graduation,” said Amy Hull. "I had never been to Indiana before and actually never been on campus, so took advantage of the opportunity and flying home today.” In 2024, the Indianapolis International Airport had a record 10 million passengers to date. “It was actually a really great experience. We stopped through several airports on the way here, and this was probably my favorite one. It was very easy,” said Hull. This year the terminals have been flooded with passengers for NBA All-Star weekend, Indy 500, Taylor Swift and more. Indianapolis airport to add new flights to Portland, Tampa, Atlanta The airport hit the 10 million milestone just after the Big Ten Championship football game that was hosted at Lucas Oil Stadium. With folks wanting to see friends and family for the holidays, even more people are taking off. “We'll actually get home probably Christmas Eve night around midnight,” said Swearingen. "With a tan and Santa, yeah, because we'll probably see him, probably right?" AAA estimates that 157,000 Hoosiers will be flying home to see friends and family this holiday season.
