NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A man who ambushed two victims he believed were hunting him was sentenced to 55 years in prison last week.
Israel Malachi Robinson was sentenced for murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime by Judge Patrick C. Fant, III.
Jacquez Butler and E.J. Morgan were walking through the Pinecrest Apartments playground on June 22, 2021, when two men with AR-style rifles ambushed them.
Butler, who was 16 years old, was shot 15 times while Morgan managed to escape, according to the Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
Investigators found Butler and 28 spent cartridges in two areas of the playground.
Throughout the investigation, North Charleston detectives identified Robinson and his co-defendant, Framon Frasier, Jr., as the suspects.
"Detectives discovered that Robinson had an ongoing dispute with a group of people who were hunting him," the solicitor's office said. "It is unclear whether the dispute was over debts, jealousy, or rivalry."
Robinson and Frasier shot the victims, believing they were Robinson's "hunters." After police arrested Robinson, they found three boxes of the same ammunition found at the crime scene.
"Robinson was being hunted, but he became the hunter," said Assistant Solicitor Lemuel Zeigler, who prosecuted the case. "This was a team effort to deliver justice for Jaquez Butler and his family. Investigator Jennifer Butler and Shamika Smith played vital roles in the success of this trial."
