Dec 16, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Residents in parts of East Baton Rouge Parish and Lafayette have yet another election to mark on their calendars early in the new year.
A special election is being called on Feb. 15 after state Sen. Cleo Fields left the legislature to join Congress as the representative for the sixth congressional district and state Sen. Jean-Paul Coussan joined the Public Service Commission.
Candidates for this race will qualify between Jan. 7-9 at their local clerk of courts.
The Fields’ Senate District 14 stretches through most of north Baton Rouge and runs through downtown into LSU. Coussan’s Senate District 23 encompasses the majority of southwestern Lafayette.
State Rep. Larry Selders has already announced he intends to run for the District 14 seat as well as Carolyn Hill, a former member of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Voters can look up if they live in these districts at sos.la.gov.

Early voting for this race is scheduled from Feb. 1 to Feb. 8, with Election Day on Feb. 15. If a runoff is necessary, it will take place on March 29. This timeline ensures all Senate seats are filled before the regular legislative session begins on April 14.
