Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. President Emanuel Macron. Governor Wes Moore. What do the three have in common? They all know how to hold their own while shaking hands with Donald Trump.Moore set social media aflame this weekend after a photograph of him shaking hands with president-elect Donald Trump before the Army-Navy game circulated online. Moore was celebrated for beating Trump at his own handshake game. Here is journalist Yasher Ali’s post:Trump and Maryland Governor Wes Moore meet at the Army-Navy game.[image or embed]— Yashar Ali 🐘 (@yasharali.bsky.social) December 14, 2024 at 9:52 PMEven the description from the alternative text for the photo invokes Moore’s assertiveness and Trump’s wariness: “Wes Moore, standing on the right, is wearing a light olive-green jacket with a logo over the chest. He has a clean-shaven head and is smiling, though his expression could be interpreted as polite or even slightly sarcastic due to the raised eyebrows and subtle tilt of his head. His upright posture and slight forward lean suggest confidence and assertiveness as he meets Trump’s handshake. Donald Trump, on the left, is seen from behind and slightly to the side, identifiable by his blonde hair and dark overcoat. His posture is slightly leaned forward as he extends his hand, initiating the interaction.”Trump’s manner of handshake made headlines when he took office the first time in 2017, as it was accompanied by a yank towards him that often left the other person physically off-balance. Some loved the move and hailed it as a show of “dominance” and others found it coarse and barbaric in a situation that required diplomacy and finesse.Social media users were quick to note the body language in the photo, asserting that if anyone exerted power and stable footing, it was Moore.Looks like half a man on the left getting owned by a whole man on the right. Trump is going to need a new hand from the tiny hand store after Macron and then this.— lumahai-lizard.bsky.social (@lumahai-lizard.bsky.social) December 14, 2024 at 11:25 PMYep, dude leaning in towering over T ready about to tell T something about himself while T leans back cowering. 🤣— AnnaBanana (@annabanana2u.bsky.social) December 14, 2024 at 10:56 PMThere is no chance the Trump handshake hump worked here— BoarOnTheFloor (@boarish.bsky.social) December 14, 2024 at 10:15 PM“He who stares down a dirty old man, is the man for the people” ~ African Proverb— rngtrik.bsky.social (@rngtrik.bsky.social) December 15, 2024 at 1:32 PMNot everyone was impressed – some were disappointed Moore went so far as to be cordial towards Trump and shake his hand. Walk on by, don't say HI, sorry, feeling very hostile right now.— chichi60.bsky.social (@chichi60.bsky.social) December 14, 2024 at 9:58 PMDisappointing— M👋🏾 (@ariesmafia.bsky.social) December 15, 2024 at 9:24 AMPlease Governor Wes Moore do not kiss the ring. The Conversation published a lengthy analysis in 2017 entitled “The psychology behind Trump’s awkward handshake … and how to beat him at his own game.” The Hill published a short explanation of the “arm drag handshake,” and then a video of a black belt martial arts instructor demonstrating how one can defend oneself from it with the “goose neck wrist lock.” The instructor did say he probably would not perform it if he shook hands with Trump, so as not to alarm the Secret Service. They did, however, note the world leaders who refused to be thrown off balance, like Trudeau and Macron. We can now add Moore to that list, and Marylanders on social media were proud.
