BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A trial date has been scheduled in late January for a man charged in the death of a toddler he's accused of leaving in a hot car for four hours. Lorenzo Anthony Johnson is scheduled for trial on Jan. 27 on charges including involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty, Superior Court records show. He's being held without bail. Driver cited for going 90 mph at DUI checkpoint: Bakersfield PD Two other hearings are set to take place before then. It's possible the trial will be postponed. Johnson, 39, is a registered sex offender. He was convicted in 2008 in Los Angeles County of committing lewd or lascivious acts with a minor under 14. On Sept. 28, authorities say, Johnson left 20-month-old Dream Shorter inside a Dodge Charger parked on Squire Lane. The temperature reached 96 degrees that day. Johnson told investigators he forgot about the child because people who’d been harassing him for years followed him as he drove the Dodge Charger with Dream in the backseat. When he got home he went inside — turning the car off and leaving Dream buckled in — and grabbed a gun, planning to shoot them, he said according to court documents. He went inside and checked surveillance video and saw the harassers were gone, Johnson told investigators. Dream’s whereabouts slipped his mind, Johnson said. It wasn’t until four hours later that the child was removed from the car, documents said. Dream was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson was arrested the same day.
