(KRON) -- A 6-year-old boy who ran onto Interstate 280 in San Jose on Friday night was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP responded to the report of a crash on northbound I-280 south of Leland Avenue involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at 11 p.m. First responders found a 6-year-old boy who had suffered major injuries from the collision. The child was transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. The preliminary investigation, according to CHP, suggests that the boy was on the right shoulder of the interstate at around 10:52 p.m. before running into the center lane. The 6-year-old was struck by a 2024 Nissan Altima driven by a 36-year-old San Jose man, authorities said. Lanes of northbound I-280 were partially reopened half an hour after the crash before fully reopening at around midnight. The fatal crash remains under investigation, CHP said.
