(KRON) -- A 6-year-old boy who ran onto Interstate 280 in San Jose on Friday night was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP responded to the report of a crash on northbound I-280 south of Leland Avenue involving a pedestrian and a vehicle at 11 p.m. First responders found a 6-year-old boy who had suffered major injuries from the collision. The child was transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation, according to CHP, suggests that the boy was on the right shoulder of the interstate at around 10:52 p.m. before running into the center lane. The 6-year-old was struck by a 2024 Nissan Altima driven by a 36-year-old San Jose man, authorities said.

Authorities did not say if the driver sustained any injuries in the collision. Further details of the incident were not immediately available.
Lanes of northbound I-280 were partially reopened half an hour after the crash before fully reopening at around midnight.
The fatal crash remains under investigation, CHP said.
