Less windy for now slightly cooler temperatures

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Seasonably cold air, with below-freezing temperatures for the northwestern three-fourths of the region, is once again the big weather story this morning with very clear skies, mostly light winds, and dry air mostly allowing for the radiational cooling process. Very cold air is once again present in the San Luis Valley as air temperatures around zero degrees for a few areas, while most areas are experiencing air temperatures in the upper single digits, teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, and even the 50s from north-northwest to south-southeast from high to lower elevation generally, although some valley locations are dealing with the seasonably cold, dense air-mass.

With the decks of high-level clouds moving mostly to the east into the region this afternoon with the stronger upper-level west-southwesterly winds, as well as calmer winds, dry-enough air will lead to no precipitation. Afternoon temperatures will be mostly above normal, but slightly cooler in most areas because of the tail-end of yesterday's warmer and windier pattern, now starting to more-calmly shift the winds from the north-northeast for the eastern half of the region, leading to the slight cooldown. From the morning school commute through the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the high 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and near 70 degrees from north-northeast to south-southwest.
A briefly warmer air-mass will return tomorrow, as despite a couple of slight cooldowns ahead being accompanied by lighter winds, generally warmer weather will continue for at least the next several days as some passing upper-level clouds will continue to be a signal of stronger winds returning each other day for some areas, locally elevating the fire threat occasionally with areas of blowing dust possible, as well as some blowing snow in the higher elevations.
