Prosecutors charged a man with criminal vehicular homicide Monday in a weekend crash that killed a 61-year-old bystander in Maplewood. Nicholas John Price, 37, of Roseville, was fleeing from law enforcement, according to the criminal complaint. About 7:30 p.m. Friday, a woman called 911 and reported that Price threatened to set her on fire, grabbed her by the face and shoved her against a wall and injured her hand, the complaint said. She said it happened in Roseville but she’d left that location. Nicholas John Price (Courtesy of the Ramsey County sheriff’s office) Roseville officers saw Price’s Chevrolet Tahoe around 10:23 p.m. They followed the Tahoe and initiated a traffic stop. Price kept driving. Roseville officers tried a PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver to get the vehicle to stop, but it didn’t work. Ramsey County sheriff’s deputies joined in the pursuit near Ramsey County Road C and Rice Street. Law enforcement lost sight of the Tahoe and saw it again at Edgerton Street and Little Canada Road. The Tahoe passed a car, driving into the lane of oncoming traffic. A deputy was coming from the other way, pulled over and turned on his squad’s lights. Price drove past and the deputy turned around to pursue the Tahoe, according to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office. The deputy was about half a mile behind the Tahoe, which continued on and crashed into a Toyota Corolla in the area of Edgerton Street and Bellwood Avenue, the complaint said. “The deputy came upon debris in the road when he crested the hill near Roselawn Avenue,” the complaint continued. The 61-year-old Corolla’s driver was trapped in his car and told deputies he couldn’t breathe, asking them what happened. He stopped communicating with first responders when they tried to extract him from his car. Medics took him to the hospital, where he died. Officials hadn’t released his name as of Monday morning. The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office charged Price with criminal vehicular homicide by operating a vehicle in a grossly negligent manner and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, resulting in death of another person.
