Vineyard Wind turbine work resumes after July blade failure

NANTUCKET, Mass. (WLNE) — Vineyard Wind resumed installation of wind turbine blades Saturday in the wake of a turbine blade failure in July, according to the Town of Nantucket.
The decision to continue working on the project was made “following the October announcement that approval was granted to proceed once stringent safety and operational requirements were met.”
The process included work to remove the impacted blade, which entailed removing the hanging portion of the blade, and clearing debris from the platform and seabed, according to Vineyard Wind.
Also conducted was removal of the root of the damaged blade from the rotor hub.
An environmental analysis was also conducted, including studying the chemical composition of the damaged blade debris, as well as the sampling the water column, sediment and shellfish.
Production company GE Verona announced its intentions to “remove some blades from the Vineyard Wind farm while strengthening other blades as needed to support the safety and operational readiness of this project.”
“We appreciate the commitment our team has shown to this project and the care with which the federal, tribal, state, and local authorities have approached it,” said Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Moeller.
GE Verona stated in July that the blade’s failure was due to a manufacturing issue, and not a faulty design.
