Back in March, the child's death was ruled a homicide but police didn’t say how she died.
According to court documents, an autopsy revealed that Carrell-Bennett died from blunt-force trauma to the head.
Court documents revealed that McDonald lived at the same residence as Carrell-Bennet since the spring of 2023.
On Nov. 2, 2023, Gardner police were sent to apartments near 188th and Locust Streets around 4 p.m. for a medical call.
As first responders took the child to a local hospital, officials determined the child had suffered an injury that led to a life-threatening condition. Bennett died a few days after the incident due to her injuries.

According to court records, a CT scan done at the hospital showed significant injury with blood and/or fluid in her brain. She also suffered soft tissue swelling consistent with an impact injury.
McDonald denied ever hitting the child, court documents say.
McDonald has a preliminary hearing set for Jan. 21.
