Star East Forsyth High School quarterback affirms commitment to UNC Chapel Hill after Bill Belichick hire
Dec 16, 2024
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WGHP) — Star East Forsyth High School quarterback Bryce Baker has affirmed his commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill following the hire of Bill Belichick.
On Saturday, Baker announced on X that he would still be signing with North Carolina.
Baker, a four-star recruit, is ranked by 247Sports as the fourth-best player in the state of North Carolina for the Class of 2025.

He has long been the star of the Tar Heels' 2025 recruiting class, initially committing to UNC in June 2023. However, the dismissal of head coach Mack Brown led to questions as to whether or not UNC could hold onto Baker's commitment.
Big-time programs such as Lousiana State University (LSU) and Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) expressed interest in signing Baker following Brown's firing and the early signing period from Dec. 4-6 went by and Baker did not sign with Carolina.
Experts speculated that the Tar Heels' ability to retain Baker's commitment would be tied to whoever they chose as their next head coach.
Well, UNC of course made the decision to hire the greatest head coach in the history of the NFL on Wednesday and an affirmed commitment from Baker followed shortly thereafter.
"With Bill Belichick coming in, I feel like, from a developmental aspect, he has the upper hand on a lot of other options right now," Baker told InsideCarolina on his decision to stick with UNC. "So, I'm excited about that. I'm excited about building my legacy in North Carolina at no better place than the University of North Carolina. So, I'm excited about those two things."
Scouting report
Standing at around 6-feet-3-inches tall and 195 pounds, Baker has the physical frame to stand in the pocket and deliver accurate passes under pressure from defenders.
For his career at East Forsyth, Baker threw for 6,605 yards and completed 70.6% of his passes for 79 touchdowns and just eight interceptions over two seasons, according to MaxPreps. He also ran for 536 yards and nine touchdowns.
Andrew Ivins, 247Sports Director of Scouting, wrote the following scouting report about Baker.
Mobile signal caller with a muscled-up build that will throw his wide receivers open. Owns a compact release and can create some torque with his upper half.
"Can be a bit streaky at times as a passer, but has some impressive long balls on the junior spray chart.
"Really excels at attacking the back corner of the end zone when down in the red zone. Lower-body twitch allows him to escape pressure and extend plays. Effective on designed runs and has the burst to beat defenders to the sticks, although he isn’t the type of quarterback that’s looking to just take off and run.
"Should be viewed as a potential multi-year starter at the Power Four level. Must keep improving his footwork and decision-making, but has tools to develop over the next few years. Likely to find the most success in a modern spread attack that wants to move him around."
Andrew Ivins, 247Sports Director of Scouting
UNC QBs in the NFL
Baker is looking to join the list of UNC quarterbacks that have made it into the NFL in recent years.
TJ Yates was the first UNC quarterback to ever start in an NFL game after the Houston Texans selected him in the Fifth Round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He started for UNC from 2007-2010 and is now the quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons.

His successor, Bryn Renner made a few NFL practice squads as did Renner's successor Marquise Williams.

Mitch Trubisky succeeded Williams and was selected with the second pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. Trubisky made the Pro Bowl in 2018 and is now the Buffalo Bills' backup quarterback.

Trubsky was succeeded by Chazz Surratt who eventually moved to linebacker at UNC and was selected in the Third Round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He now plays for the New York Jets.

Sam Howell succeeded Surratt at quarterback in 2019 and starred for the Tar Heels for three seasons before being selected in the Fifth Round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders.
Howell started for the Commanders last season and was recently traded to the Seattle Seahawks.
