WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - With drone sightings spreading through the East Coast, federal officials are helping local and state authorities. They are also asking Congress to pass legislation to give them more authority and resources to mitigate the risks with these drones. It's been a growing mystery, as drones started appearing in the sky over New Jersey, but now other states are experiencing the same kind of aerial spectacle with no clear answer. "It's not a bird. It's not a plane. It's a drone,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). An increased presence of drones in the sky has federal officials scratching their heads as to where they are coming from. “We know of no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the Northeast. And we are vigilant in investigating this matter,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says they are not aware of any immediate danger and is working with state and local authorities to deal with the drones, but they need more help from Congress. "We want state and local authorities to also have the ability to counter drone activity under federal supervision,” said Mayorkas. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) committed to taking action. "I am going to help pass, and I'm going to co-sponsor legislation that will combat these drones,” said Schumer. Connecticut Democrat Congressman Jim Himes was frustrated with the lack of answers and transparency from federal officials. "The answer 'We don't know' is not a good enough answer,” said Himes. Himes agrees with the assessment that these drones are not from Iran or China and says this is not the predecessor for an attack.
