According to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office news release, on Dec. 11 at approximately 10:52 p.m., deputies were conducting patrols on Route 2 near Route 44 in Painesville Township. During this time, they initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for multiple equipment and traffic-related violations.
When deputies approached the vehicle and the driver rolled down the window, a strong smell of burnt marijuana indicated the driver was smoking marijuana while driving, which is against the law.
According to the release, the deputies asked both driver and passenger if they had a weapon and they both said they did not. The deputy asked the driver, identified as 32-year-old Jerome Jackson of Painesville, to exit the vehicle. During the pat down search he found the driver had drugs and a loaded handgun.
The other deputy asked the passenger, identified as 31-year-old Giovanni Gibson of Painesville, to exit the vehicle and drugs and a loaded handgun were also found.
Further investigation led to the recovery of approximately 21 grams of crack cocaine, 16 grams of cocaine, 3.5 grams of heroin, 25 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, along with digital scales, baggies and other items consistent with drug distribution, according to the release.
Both driver and passenger were taken into custody.
Jackson was charged with multiple felony drug and felony weapons offenses, while Gibson faces felony and misdemeanor weapons-related charges.
