COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) Mid-Missourians will have an opportunity to give back this holiday season during The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri’s 18th annual "One for One Drive." The event will take place Dec. 18 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with donation drop-offs at the Columbia Mall and Buchheit in Jefferson City. Food Bank spokeswoman, Katie Adkins says the need for food assistance in Mid-Missouri is higher than ever. "We just hit a ten-year high in November, we served more than 12,800 people at the market. That's just a single month so we know that need is high right now," Adkins said. She added that the Food Bank’s Market has consistently served more people each month compared to this time last year. In 2023, Central Pantry and the Market in Boone County assisted roughly 10,000 people per month. Adkins says that rising food insecurity stems from various economic challenges. "We know that people who are coming into the market are saying, you know, this is helping me keep gas in the car, so I can get to work. This is helping me pay for my child care needs' or you know, it's the end of the month and I'm just out of money. So I'm in need for food right now," Adkins said. The Food Bank is asking for non-perishable food items such as canned meats, fruits, and vegetables, as well as pasta, boxed meal kits, and other staples. Perishable goods and glass containers cannot be accepted. For those who prefer to make a financial contribution, Adkins emphasized the efficiency of monetary donations. "If you're someone who wants your impact to be felt across all 32 countries that the food bank serves, you can make a gift of money to the food bank," Adkins said. "The food bank is able to use that money with our bulk purchasing power that we have to provide at least four meals for every single dollar that you donate. So if you donate $25, you're helping provide at least 100 meals."  The Food Bank does not have a specific fundraising goal for the drive, but Adkins expressed excitement about the community’s potential to make a difference. "We don't have a specific goal set, but we are just looking forward to being able to share whatever we're able to fundraise and whatever we raise will be incredibly helpful for people during the holidays," she said.
