Officials warn people to not walk on Missouri River ice
Dec 15, 2024
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — As temperatures continue to dip in the capitol city, the Bismarck city government says ice pans are forming on the Missouri River.
And while these pans might look thick enough to take a couple steps on, authorities are warning people to not walk on the ice.
Officials say warmer weather is expected this week, which authorities say may cause rising water levels.
Since 2010, ice buildup on the Missouri has caused water levels to rise.
Right now, authorities are predicting that ice cover could push the water levels from 4.7 feet to between nine and 11 feet, which is still below minor flood stage of 14.5 feet.
But with ice accumulation expecting to fluctuate in the next few weeks, the Bismarck city government is asking people to stay vigilant.
