Flipping through the pages of the Lake County Touchdown Club banquet at the American Croatian on Dec. 15, Alex Weiss didn’t think he stood a chance. Glancing through the list of candidates, of which he was one, for the 2024 Chuck Koelble Award as the club’s student-athlete if the year, the Riverside senior pretty much counted himself out. “If you read some of the bios of the other guys, my GPA is under theirs,” he said. “I was like, ‘Wow, some of these guys are high-achievers.” PHOTOS: Lake County Touchdown Club banquet, Dec. 15, 2024 Weiss should take a long look in the mirror. Because when it comes to listing high-achievers, Weiss rises right to the top of the list. That's a big reason why the multi-sport athlete from Riverside has been named the winner of the Koelble Award, which comes with a $1,000 scholarship courtesy of Classic Auto Group. As TD Club member Myndi Allen read off Weiss' accomplishments — academically, athletically and civically — club member Dan Kukura leaned over and whispered, "his resume is so big, we couldn't fit it all in the program." Weiss not excels in football and wrestling at Riverside, but he sports a 3.71 grade-point average. He is an AP scholar with distinction, a member of the National Honor Society, participated in Buckeye Boys' State and and earned his Eagle Scout accommodation recently to go with his 622 hours of community service work. Additionally, Weiss is involved with 4-H in Lake County and is part of the Lake County Leadership program. "I try to get myself involved with as much as I possibly can," the son of Christian Weiss and Kelley Smith said. "I want people to be able to count on me I want to be able to help them anyway I can. Involving myself in as many things as possible helps me in that way." Weiss also started "Three Brothers Landscaping" with his siblings Ben and Erich "as a way to pay for college, car payments and things like that." Add it all up, and free time is a precious commodity he doesn't have. "Free time is pretty limited," he said. "I enjoy everything I do and love the opportunities I have. I don't what else I would do." Being involved and helping serve others won't end when Weiss graduates from Riverside this coming spring. He is pre-enlisted in the US Army National Guard with plans to train as an infantryman MOS 11B. That is, of course, unless his top preference doesn't come to fruition. "My next step is to hopefully get into West Point Military Academy, serving in the military in some way," he said. "I want to serve in the third rank battalion like my dad. It's one of my biggest lifetime goals." Aside from the Koelble Award, other top awards presented at the TD Club banquet went to Danny Hoffman, who received a service award from the Northeast Ohio Football Officials Association, and Jim Myers, who received a service award from the Lake County Football Coaches Association.
