BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — Many people joke about the unfortunate relationship between dogs and mailmen, but this gag is often rooted in a very real concern. In many cases, pet attacks can lead to physical injuries, emotional trauma, or even expensive lawsuits — and attack incidents are even more common around delivery services, especially when owners aren't present. With that being said, which dogs are the most dreaded among North Dakota's delivery drivers? In a survey on the most dangerous dogs in America, personal injury firm Bisnar Chase polled 3,000 delivery drivers on the types they least like to encounter while on their routes. Below is a list of the ten most dog breeds that ND drivers fear the most, according to the study. Although many would expect notorious breeds like Rottweilers and Pit Bull Terriers to top this list, in North Dakota, the German Shepherd is considered the most dangerous dog to contend with. This, Bisnar Chase claims, is due to their natural intelligence, speed, and strength, as well as their territorial nature and swift reaction time. While the general fear of larger and more notorious dog breeds is understandable, the presence of small breeds like Chihuahuas and Miniature Schnauzers may come as a surprise to some. However, in a press release, Brian Chase of Bisnar Chase warns that small dog owners are just as subject to legal scrutiny if their pet bites another person. In most cases, he states, an owner can be held liable for any injury caused by their pet, even if the dog has never bitten anyone before or the owner was not present when the bite occurred. Where are North Dakota’s happiest employees located? "People tend to dismiss smaller dogs as less dangerous," Chase states in the release. "But in the eyes of the law, a bite is a bite. Whether the dog weighs 10 pounds or 100 pounds, the owner is equally liable for any injuries caused. People often assume that because a dog is small, the injuries will be minor and not lead to litigation. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Even a seemingly harmless nip can result in infection, emotional distress, and in some cases, legal action."
