Wreaths Across America Day honors fallen heroes nationwide
Dec 15, 2024
AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Saturday was National Wreaths Across America Day, where volunteers across the country will remember our country's fallen heroes.
This tradition dates back to 1992 when Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company up in Harrington Maine had a surplus of wreaths.
With the help of other companies in the area, they made arrangements to deliver the extra wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
This act was quiet and private until in 2005, a photo of the stones at Arlington adorned with the wreaths went viral across the United States and requests poured in from others wanting to purchase and lay wreaths at Arlington, and then other veterans cemeteries.
More than two million volunteers will gather today at over 4,600 cemeteries across all 50 states to honor and remember our country's fallen heroes, placing a wreath and saying the name of each veteran aloud.
Each December, a convoy carrying the wreaths travels down the East Coast, escorted by local law enforcement, stopping in communities from Maine along the way to Arlington Virginia, arriving on National Wreaths Across America Day for volunteers to place on veteran graves.
Their goal is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom.
