Safety, Rules and Regulations to flying drones
Dec 15, 2024
CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) - There are many rules and regulations that someone flying a drone needs to follow and from what videos are showing in New Jersey and other states, it doesn't appear to be the case for the supposed mystery drones.
"Not sure what is going on there, to be honest with you," said Vinnie Melling, a certified commercial drone pilot.
Residents in New Jersey, New York, and other states have reported mysterious flying objects…appearing to be drones… but even seasoned commercial drone pilots are confused.
"I find it puzzling because these drones clearly fall under the size and weight category that needs to adhere to certain regulations," said Melling.
Drones over .55 lbs in weight need to be registered in order to legally fly them.
Newer drones are equipped with a remote ID that stores important information, including the registration and where the drone look off from and this information is public knowledge. The FAA has access to the information but you can also find it on drone tracking apps. For older drone models, there is a module you can buy and attach.
Drones are also required to have lights on at all times, another rule these supposed drones are breaking.
"It needs to have a green light on the right, a red light on the left and a white light in the back," said Melling.
The Federal Aviation Administration is currently having a 12 Days of Drones campaign, helping to remind those with drones of the safety, rules and regulations.
The campaign runs from December 7th to December 22nd and covers everything from the safety test and registering your drone to where you can fly a drone and flying at night. All information is posted on the F.A.A's Facebook
Register your drone with the FAA to ensure you are following the regulations.
