FORT STEWART, Ga. (WSAV) - Local soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice were remembered in a special way on Saturday during the Wreath's for Warriors Walk at Cottrell Field on Fort Stewart. During the event, veteran’s wreaths were placed at the base of 469 trees for each fallen soldier along the Fort Stewart Warriors Walk in a solemn memorial service. "Before all this I was a soldier, so some of these soldiers I served with, so I knew a couple of them.", said Jeff Fornshell, Vice President of the Wreaths for Warriors Walk. "So, it is emotional to do a ceremony but I'm really glad that I am able to be part of this ceremony." Barbara Bilbrey was in attendance to represent her son, Army Specialist Charles E. Bilbrey Jr., who was killed in action on July 26, 2007. "This is probably the most emotional of all the ceremonies that we attend because it's bringing the Christmas season in with Charlie and remembering all those years that we spent with Charlie at Christmastime." said Bilbrey. "Plus, it's not just Charlie, there's 468 other soldiers represented here, 468 other families that also at Christmastime are sitting with a loss that they have to deal with." Volunteers unite to help Army veteran in Rincon Wreaths for Warriors Walk was established 18 years ago with a special goal in mind. "Soldiers PCS, so we wanted those soldiers to know that the soldiers that they lost would always still be remembered by people that are here in the local community.", said Fornshell. "Even if, you know, they PCS, we're here to remember these soldiers that were killed in action."
