RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Two Central Virginia schools competed for a state championship on Saturday, December 14th. The Varina Blue Devils faced off against Phoebus in the Class 4 Title game. The Essex Trojans faced off against Grayson County in the Class 1 Title Game. CLASS 4 State Championship:Phoebus 23, Varina 6 Varina took a 6-3 second-quarter lead, but after starting quarterback Kaleb Wyche went down with an injury, the Blue Devils struggled to move the ball offensively and fell to the Phantoms 23-7. CLASS 1 State Championship:Essex 22, Grayson County 0 Essex avenged a 2023 State Championship loss with a win on Saturday, finishing their season 14-1. The Trojans won their playoff games in shutouts, four out of five games.
