Euclid City Council approves residential shoreline projects
Dec 15, 2024
Euclid City Council recently discussed the ongoing efforts to prevent shoreline erosion from happening in the city and three projects were approved that will be completed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The three projects are all in the “submerged lands” in Lake Erie outside of Edgecliff Drive.
Law Director Patrick J. Cooney said that council had to approve the legislation so that residents along the area could work with the Army Corps to prevent more of their land from eroding.
“(The residents) are interested in doing some erosion control measures at their residence,” Cooney told council. “The permitting process… requires a resolution from council that the work complies with the land use there and also that there is no intended use in that area by the city.”

Euclid has also addressed erosion issues when it developed the $18 million Shoreline Stabilization and Lakefront Public Access Trail.
According to the city’s website, the boulders and other improvements that were made along the ¾ -mile trail, helped protect the apartment buildings above it, and at the same time, provide a place for residents to access the lake.

Ward 5 Councilperson Tara Hannum, chair of the Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship Committee, told her fellow council members that the city had completed similar work and that there was “nothing new” in what was being proposed.
“Basically, this is what has been done at other properties along the lakeshore before,” Hannum said. “It’s the same process, so it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before. They are just going to know who’s doing it at these different properties, so we have less erosion along the shoreline.”
