Predicting which Lions players are in for a big game against the Buffalo Bills. The Detroit Lions face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon in what may be the team’s biggest test. While they continue to hold the lead in the NFC North and the entire conference, Detroit’s lead remains only one in both races, and a loss to the Bills would jeopardize their chances at holding on.
The Bills offense is undeniable. Quarterback and MVP candidate Josh Allen is having a career year, and is the biggest reason why the Bills have scored at least 30 points in seven straight games. Buffalo’s defense is a little more inconsistent, but still ranks highly as a unit. They’re ranked eighth in points allowed and 10th in DVOA.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
Which Lions player will have a big game against the Bills?
My answer: I think it’ll be Jahmyr Gibbs.
The Bills have allowed 4.7 yards per carry this season (26th) and a big reason for that is their tendency to give up big chunk plays in the running game. They’ve allowed 49 rushes of at least 10 yards, and Gibbs ranks second in rushes of 10+ yards (30)—only trailing another MVP candidate (Saquon Barkley).
Gibbs currently ranks fifth in the NFL in total rushing yards (1,016), which is quite the accomplishment considering he’s doesn’t even have the most carries on the team. His 178 rushing attempts is narrowly bettered by David Montgomery (180).
If Gibbs can show his explosiveness on Sunday, it can keep Allen off the field and give Detroit their best chance to hold onto their lead in the standings with only three more games remaining.
